Chendamangalam - religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence

About 42 km from Ernakulam town, Ernakulam district,central Kerala. A church, a temple, a mosque and the remains of a Jewish synagogue - all lying in close proximity is an ideal example of the ancient Indian tradition of religious tolerance and peaceful co-existence. At Chendamangalam, apart from these historic evidences, nature also unveils her rare combination. The place has a singular geography of three rivers, seven inlets, monumentocks and vast expanses of green plains.


Paliam Palace

Chendamangalam was once the abode of the Paliath Achans, the prime ministers of the Maharajas of Kochi. Their residence, the Paliam Palace represents the architectural splendour of Kerala. The Palace houses a collection of historic documents and relics. The monumentocks at Kottayi Kovilakom present an unusual view of the church, temple, mosque and the synagogue.


VAIPIKOTTA SEMINARY

Vaipikotta seminary was built by the Portuguese in 1577,16th century. Many Vattezhuthu inscriptions were encountered during the exploration done here in 1935. The potteries collected from the nearby areas of the church are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum Thrissur. The seminary with 50 cents of land was declared as protected . and first printing is done here



KOTTAYIL KOVILAKOM

The word Kottayil Kovilakom means the palace inside the fort. It is the place where the Royal palace of the Villar Vattathu Raja, who ruled over the area of Chennamangalam and adjacent coastal areas, was situated. The remains around the old well is declared as protected site in 1936. A Vishnu temple and the remains of the Vaipikotta seminary are seen near by this protected site. The renovated jewish synagogue, Jewish cemetery , old St. Mary’s church ,Sree Krishna temple and mosque revels the historical importance .Periyar river and its beautiful in land water ways coconut lagoons,elphant rock and village life are unforgettable experience to the visitor


Kodanad- Elephant kraal

Kodanad, set on the southern banks of the Periyar river amid the beautiful high ranges near Perumbavoor, which is about 50km east of Kochi, Kodanad is one of the largest elephant training centers of Kerala. And it is famous for ‘ Elephant Kraal' the mini zoo Kodanad is the only training centre for elephants in Kerala where stranded baby elephants found from the forests across the region are trained.30 km from Ernakulum town and belongs to the highranges on the southern bank of the river Periyar.



Iringol- Forest temple

Ringole kavu, a miniature forest, is located between 48kms from Ernakulam , wonderful rare place of a temple in the tropical rain forest in the middle of a town. Iringole Kavu is an evergreen forest that survived hurricane and drought for years. Some trees are as old as 500 years. The rich flora and fauna include valuable herbs; medicinal plants, monkeys, squirrel and mynah are sighted in the region. The verities of bird’s presence are also an added attraction.


Kalady-birth place of Adi Sankara

35 kms from Ernakulam. The Birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya, the great Advaita philosopher of the 8th century, Kaladi is 10 km from Aluva nearest to cochin air port . Kaladi has got Sringeri Madham, Ramakrishna Asramam and the Sreesankara stupa. Temples dedicated to Sri Sankara, Sarada Devi, Sri Krishna and Sri Ramakrishna add to the sanctity of the destination. Temple was built in 1976 with the hope that it would ultimately become a temple for all religions and an abode of peace.

A place called Crocodile Ghat is where Sri Sankara took his vows of renunciation. According to legends, a crocodile caught hold of him and refused to release him until Sankara's mother Aryamba permitted him to accept Sanyas (renunciation).



Kumbalangi Model tourism village

Kumbalanghi is a village in Cochin, 13 kms away and half an hour drive from the cochin port. It is beautiful as the first model fisheries and tourism village in India. Kodungalloor

Kodungalloor is an important place in Thrissur and is famous for its pilgrimage centers. It is an important tourist attraction and many people visit this town where it is said that the apostle of Jesus Christ is said to have landed when he came to India. Trichur Kodungalloor pilgrimage is given much importance and is held in high esteem. Read on further to know about important places of pilgrimage in Kodungalloor, Thrissur. This place was earlier known by the name of Muziris, after the Greeks named it that way. The place has a rich historical background and is very intriguing.


KOTTAPPURAM FORT

The Kottappuram fort or Cranganoor Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1523 AD. Later it was captured and destroyed by the Dutch in 1662. The remains of the Fort is protected by the Department of Archaeology due to its historical importance. The remaining part of the original fort wall shows that it was built by laterite and was 18 feet in thickness. Location: Kodungalloor Taluk in Thrissur district.


CHERAMAN PARAMBU

The Cheraman Parambu has an area of three acres. It is believed to have the seat of the palace of Cheraman Perumal. The trial digs conducted in the area has revealed the existence of a number of Chinese shreds along with local potteries. Considering the historical importance, the site is declared as protected .


Cheraman Juma Mosque

This is a very famous mosque in Kerala as it is the first mosque in India where Juma prayers were held for the first time. The mosque was built in the year 629 A.D. and is famous for a lamp that is considered important by people of all religions.


Bhagawathy Temple

The Bhagawathy temple is a very famous temple in Kerala and is visited by scores of devotees from far and wide. The annual festival at the temple is a must watch and nowhere else will you find a gathering of oracles in one place as you will here.


St. Thomas Church

This church is built as a tribute to the great apostle of Jesus Christ, St. Thomas. He is said to have reached Kodungalloor when he came to India. It is a famous church and very important among the Christians.
